SolidCraft: Open-Source Parametric CAD in Rust with MCP Support
Problem
Combining the post and comments, users express concerns about parametric modeling capabilities, AI automation integration, and commercial licensing costs of existing open-source parametric CAD tools. Particularly, the limitations of AI agents in generating/modifying parameterized sketches and extrusions, and OpenSCAD's lack of visual reasoning hinder rapid iteration. Meanwhile, users desire free, open-source Fusion360 alternatives, but current projects still have shortcomings in kernel maturity and workflow convenience.
Pain points
- AI agents cannot easily create or modify parameterized sketches and extrusions; in FreeCAD MCP, the agent does not work to easily modify things, cannot create sketches then extrude them fully parameterized.
- OpenSCAD lacks "visual reasoning", text-based workflow limits modeling experience, lacks visual feedback.
- Commercial CAD license costs are high, piracy risks exist, users desire open-source alternatives to avoid high costs and legal risks.
- Boolean operations and NURBS issues in parametric modeling remain a hard nut for open-source kernels, limiting project maturation speed.
Questions to verify
- Have you ever tried using AI tools (such as GitHub Copilot or self-built agents) to generate or modify parametric CAD models? If so, what were the main difficulties encountered?
- What feature do you value most in an open-source parametric CAD tool? Is it parametric history, kernel stability, or AI automation integration?
- Would you be willing to switch to an open-source alternative that is not yet fully mature to avoid high commercial CAD licensing fees?
Evidence
For the Freecad mcp I didn't like it at all. The agent didn't work in a way that would let me easily modify things. I hadn't given it instructions, but it didn't really create sketches and then extrude them (after checking they're all fully parameterized.)
For openscad the problem was just that while the model could do it, the lack of "visual reasoning" (for want of a better word) really held it back.
People don’t get the super high value proposition in having these all *Craft packages controlled (automated) by AI.
I've been a heavy user of fusion360 in the past but I've been longing for an open alternative.
